Rete-Chromes by Janet Shapero

If you thought that Installations require large spaces, think again. Rete-Chromes, which can be hung within an inch from the wall, create many of the same shadow and light effects of large scale Installations. Janet Shapero, an international artist and inventor of the Rete-Chrome process, will be showing these unique art forms at the Oasis Gallery this summer from July 13 through September 7. Each Rete-Chrome is a translucent, free-floating work of art. Janet applies multiple layers of paint both directly and indirectly onto open mesh screen. The interplay of light and color through a permeable medium adds dimension and reflections that could not be achieved with traditional paint on canvas. Janet's "Rete" (which means net in Italian) - "Chromes" (colors in Greek) capture color and light in unusual and unexpected ways. Viewers say that they see landscapes, organic magnifications, sacred forms, or peaceful serenity within these abstract and evocative works. Brightly colored and highly textured, Rete-Chromes change appearance as the light changes during the course of the day or with small changes in illumination. Janet's works have won awards in Italy, France, Germany, Australia, Yugoslavia, and of course, here at home. Janet received her BFA in sculpture from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and her MFA in printmaking and sculpture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For eight years, Janet lived and worked among master carvers in the Italian Alps where she specialized in ancient marble and wood carving techniques. Back in the United States, Janet created the largest outdoor sculpture ever made from a single piece of glass and was a pioneer in claymation for animated film. Before moving to New England in 2001, Janet headed the Sculpture Department at Utah State University. Recently, she served as a visiting professor at Mass College of Art, Wellesley College, and Maine College of Art. Janet travels to Spain annually where she is a visiting professor in the Graduate Painting Program at the University of Barcelona.

She exhibits at the Oasis Gallery from
July 13, 2008 until September 7, 2008.

"Rete-chrome is my word for both the particular series of connected processes and the resulting artwork that have been my focus for the past ten years. It is derived from rete, Latin for net; and chrome, Greek for color. My method involves applying layers of pigment, both directly (as in painting) and indirectly (as in printmaking) to attain images on an open-weave backing."
